Can Morocco Stop France’s Third Straight Semi-Final Run?

Lucas WrightLucas Wright—July 8, 2026

As the world’s eyes turn to Gillette Stadium in Boston this Thursday, Canada has a quiet but bitter stake in the upcoming World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco. What made the date especially painful for Canadian fans is that Morocco, the same team that dismantled Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16 with only four shots on target, now stands as the final barrier for France before a potential semi-final berth. Morocco weathered Canada’s early storm in the first half, then dominated the second with goals from Azzedine Ounahi and Soufiane Rahimi, sealing a ruthless and efficient victory that left co-hosts Canada out of the tournament.

This rematch, three years in the making, carries deep emotional weight. The last time these two nations met at a World Cup was the 2022 semi-final in Qatar, where France won 2-0, ending Morocco’s historic run. Since that loss, Morocco has surged, remaining unbeaten in 10 matches since the AFCON final and entering this contest with a dangerous belief they can upset the odds. France, meanwhile, remains the tournament’s top favorite, unbeaten in 12 competitive fixtures and victorious in their last seven. If they win their eighth straight, they will become the third nation ever to reach three consecutive World Cup semi-finals.

The match will likely hinge on the performance of Kylian Mbappé, who has already scored seven goals in this tournament. He is now one of only two players in history to reach seven or more goals in two separate World Cups, alongside Lionel Messi. His penalty against Paraguay in the Round of 16 was enough for France to overcome a stubborn opponent, and his continued form could be decisive against Morocco. Morocco, however, faces a major setback: their focal-point striker Ismael Saibari is a serious doubt due to a hamstring injury after coming off early in the Canada match, which severely blunts their attacking options.

Bookmakers have already made their call, with France as heavy favorites on the moneyline and Morocco listed as significant underdogs. The draw sits well behind both teams, and betting markets suggest a low-scoring affair, with the total goal line set around two and a half. Reading the patterns, a 1-0 or 2-0 win for France appears the most logical prediction. Thirteen of France’s last 16 victories came by two-goal margins or more, while seven of Morocco’s last nine World Cup losses were by just one goal. France will likely control tempo, Morocco will defend deep, and Mbappé will eventually find the key.

Yet, if there is one team capable of shattering a favorite’s dream, it is this Moroccan squad. They proved that just by eliminating Canada, a co-host, in a display of tactical brilliance and resilience. The question now is whether they can repeat that magic against France, or whether Kylian Mbappé and Les Bleus will continue their march toward glory.

Prediction: France 2, Morocco 0 — though the Atlas Lions may still force penalties and break hearts in the process.
