A season-opening stage at Scotiabank Arena

The New York Islanders open their 2026-27 season on Wednesday, September 30, at 7:30 p.m. ET against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto is already getting its campaign started the night before, so this will be its second game in as many days.

The most talked-about storyline is the showdown between Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer, the No. 1 picks in the 2026 and 2025 NHL drafts. Even so, this game may turn more on Toronto’s depth up front and New York’s ability to support Ilya Sorokin than on the rookie headliners alone.

Why Toronto’s top forwards matter so much

McKenna is the player many fans will be watching most closely. The 18-year-old is expected to start his NHL career on a line with John Tavares and William Nylander, which should give him high-end support while easing some of the burden in his first week.

His best moments will likely come when Toronto enters the offensive zone. If he can create space and move the puck quickly, the Maple Leafs should be able to spread their attack beyond one scoring line. A quiet debut would not define his future, but his decision-making and pace will be worth tracking.

Auston Matthews remains Toronto’s most dangerous finisher. If the Islanders focus too much on McKenna’s unit, Matthews could see more room to attack, and that is usually enough to swing a tight game. Nylander also gives the Leafs another layer of danger because he can both create and finish scoring chances.

How New York can stay within striking distance

Matthew Schaefer gives the Islanders a defenseman who can influence the game at both ends. After winning the Calder Trophy last season, he now steps into a national spotlight of his own as he faces the player drafted first overall a year later. His puck-moving ability could be especially important against Toronto’s fast forwards.

Schaefer also entered the game with some uncertainty after sitting out the Islanders’ final preseason contest because of an upper-body issue. His availability and ice time will be important details when the lineup is confirmed.

If Sorokin gets the start, he could be the biggest reason New York remains competitive. He was heavily leaned on last season and led the NHL in high-danger saves, which shows how often he had to rescue the Islanders. If he finds his form early, Toronto may have to work much harder for every goal.

Bo Horvat is still the Islanders’ clearest proven scorer. He led the club with 31 goals in 68 games last season, and Toronto will need to keep him away from prime shooting areas, especially if New York gets chances on the power play.

The Barzal question could change the attack

Mathew Barzal remains one of the key uncertainty points for New York. The Islanders placed him on their injured non-roster list because of a knee problem, but he was still expected to travel with the team and had not been ruled out for the opener.

If Barzal is available, the Islanders’ offense looks far more dangerous and much harder to game-plan against. If he is absent, New York will need cleaner puck support from its other forwards to keep pace with Toronto’s deeper group.

Who has the edge before puck drop?

Toronto gets the slight lean because it is at home and can call on more proven game-breakers. Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, and McKenna give the Maple Leafs several different ways to produce offense, and that matters in a matchup likely to stay close.

Still, there is a real path for New York. Toronto’s game the night before could leave the Maple Leafs with less energy, Sorokin can erase a shot advantage, and Schaefer plus Horvat can help the Islanders make the matchup uncomfortable for the hosts.

Pick: Maple Leafs in a tight one. That outlook becomes less confident if Toronto’s opener against Montreal is taxing or if Barzal is cleared to play.
