Can Winnipeg End Edmonton’s West Division Run?

Lucas WrightLucas Wright—October 16, 2026

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers travel to Edmonton for a high-pressure Friday night matchup with their postseason future still in their control. A victory over the Elks would guarantee Winnipeg a place in the 2026 Grey Cup Playoffs, while Edmonton could capture the West Division crown with a win.

Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET on Friday, October 16. The contest brings together two teams with sharply different objectives: Winnipeg is trying to secure its playoff ticket, and Edmonton is looking to claim home-field advantage for the Western Final.

Two Teams, Two Major Objectives

Winnipeg enters the game at 8-8 and has little interest in leaving its postseason hopes to chance. The Bombers would also qualify if Calgary loses, but handling the situation themselves would be far more valuable than waiting for another result.

Edmonton, meanwhile, has already secured a home playoff game after improving to 12-4 with a 27-12 victory over Hamilton. The Elks can take the next step by defeating Winnipeg and locking up first place in the West, which would send them directly to the Western Final on November 7.

That difference in the standings does not make the game less important for Winnipeg. In fact, the Bombers have every reason to treat this as a playoff contest, particularly after Edmonton has beaten them twice during the regular season.

Winnipeg’s Resurgence Depends on Its Stars

The Bombers’ recent form has been difficult to predict. They suffered a lopsided 37-10 loss to Montreal, then answered with a crucial 33-28 win over Calgary. The victory did more than improve their record; it showed that Winnipeg’s offense can still respond when the stakes become severe.

Quarterback Zach Collaros played a central role in that response. After returning from injury, he threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns against Calgary, giving Winnipeg the vertical passing threat it had been missing. His timing with the receiving corps will be one of the most important factors in Edmonton.

Collaros does not need to carry the entire offense, however. Winnipeg would benefit from pairing its passing game with a productive rushing attack led by Brady Oliveira. Consistent runs could shorten the game, protect the quarterback, and keep Edmonton’s offense on the sideline.

Oliveira’s history against the Elks adds another layer to the matchup. In August, Winnipeg opened a game in Edmonton with a 16-0 advantage, but the Elks stormed back and won 22-19 on a walk-off field goal. The Bombers will need to avoid allowing another promising start to disappear.

Why Edmonton Has Created Problems

Edmonton has already demonstrated that it can recover from adversity against Winnipeg. The Elks overcame a 16-point deficit in August after making adjustments on both sides of the ball, and their earlier meeting also ended with Edmonton surviving a Bombers comeback.

That 22-19 result was not an isolated fluke. Edmonton’s defense repeatedly disrupted Winnipeg’s rhythm, while the offense became more balanced as the game progressed. The Elks’ ability to remain composed when trailing has made them one of the CFL’s most dangerous late-game teams.

Edmonton’s latest result offered another example of its strength. The Elks defeated Hamilton 27-12 after producing three fourth-quarter touchdowns, and defensive lineman Nickelus Carney delivered a standout performance with four sacks, six tackles, and a pass knockdown.

The home setting also favors Edmonton. The Elks have built one of the West’s strongest records and are seeking to bring playoff football back to Edmonton in a prominent role. Their confidence, combined with the opportunity to win the division, gives them a powerful incentive to finish the regular season strongly.

Three Matchup Questions That Could Set the Tone

  1. Can Winnipeg establish Oliveira early? A dependable ground game would allow the Bombers to control possession and make Edmonton defend the entire field. It would also reduce the number of obvious passing situations faced by Collaros.
  2. Will Collaros find explosive gains? Winnipeg looked considerably more dangerous through the air against Calgary. If Collaros can connect on several deep or intermediate throws, the Bombers can challenge an Edmonton defense that thrives when it creates pressure.
  3. Can Winnipeg protect a lead? The August collapse remains an obvious warning. A fast start will mean little unless the Bombers maintain discipline, convert third downs, and finish drives when Edmonton begins to rally.

What a Winnipeg Victory Would Mean

A road win would secure Winnipeg’s playoff position and provide a significant psychological lift before the postseason. It would also allow the Bombers to defeat the team that has caused them the most trouble during the year.

To accomplish that, Winnipeg must combine the best elements of its win over Calgary: efficient quarterback play, timely explosive passes, and enough defensive resistance to prevent Edmonton from turning the fourth quarter into a comeback opportunity.

The challenge is substantial. Edmonton is the stronger team in the standings, has already earned a home playoff game, and has repeatedly shown that it can recover from difficult situations. The Elks also have the chance to confirm themselves as the West’s leading contender in front of their home crowd.

Still, Winnipeg’s urgency could make the matchup far closer than the records suggest. If Oliveira controls the pace, Collaros remains aggressive without forcing throws, and the Bombers finish every quarter with purpose, they have a realistic chance to leave Edmonton with their playoff berth secured.
