Can UK Investors Finally Buy Stocks on Coinbase?

Lucas WrightLucas Wright—July 7, 2026

Coinbase has secured a groundbreaking UK investment services authorization, marking a pivotal shift in its global strategy and enabling British retail investors to trade equities directly on the platform for the first time. This regulatory milestone, announced on July 7, 2026, allows UK customers to access traditional stocks while institutional traders gain permission to engage with perpetual futures tied to crypto, equities, and commodities, effectively transforming the exchange into a comprehensive multi-asset marketplace.

The Core of the New Authorization

The newly granted license represents a significant evolution beyond Coinbase’s existing cryptoasset registration with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which was secured in February 2025. By obtaining this full investment services authorization, Coinbase Payments Ltd. has established a regulated pathway to offer derivatives and equities alongside digital assets well before the UK’s comprehensive crypto regulatory framework is scheduled to take effect in October 2027. This forward-looking approach underscores the company’s commitment to compliance and innovation, positioning it as a leader in bridging traditional finance with the crypto ecosystem.

Under the new rules, the platform expands its product suite to include:

  • Direct equity trading for UK retail customers, a feature previously unavailable to British investors on Coinbase.
  • Perpetual futures contracts for institutional traders, covering crypto assets, stock indices, and commodities with no expiry date.
  • Tokenized stocks backed one-for-one by US equities, offering dividend rights and full shareholder ownership for eligible non-US users.
  • Real World Asset (RWA) perpetual futures, providing targeted exposure to thematic indices such as AI, Defense, and the Tech 100.

Strategic Impact on Different Trader Groups

The authorization fundamentally alters the trading landscape for both retail and institutional participants in the UK. For retail investors, the ability to trade stocks directly on Coinbase eliminates the need to switch between multiple platforms, offering a unified experience with zero commission fees and access to fractional shares. This broadens the platform’s appeal beyond its traditional crypto-centric user base, attracting a wider segment of investors seeking diversified asset exposure.

Institutional traders benefit from the introduction of perpetual futures, which allow for flexible, high-use strategies in volatile markets without the constraints of traditional expiry dates. The platform also supports the transfer of existing stock portfolios from other brokers, enabling seamless portfolio management alongside crypto assets. Matt Hughes, Coinbase’s Head of Institutional Markets, emphasized that this license empowers the firm to serve a broader investor demographic and fulfill its mission as the “Everything Exchange,” integrating traditional financial products with the crypto world.

Global Context and Future Outlook

This development aligns with a broader global trend of cryptocurrency exchanges diversifying beyond token trading to deliver traditional financial instruments. Coinbase has already launched similar stock perpetual futures for eligible traders outside the US, providing synthetic exposure to major companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla. The company is also preparing to launch tokenized stocks for non-US customers, further enhancing its multi-asset capabilities.

Kate Powell, a UK-based fintech analyst, noted that the move is timely given rising institutional interest in diversified portfolios. By offering derivatives and equities on a single platform, Coinbase positions itself competitively against legacy brokers and crypto-native rivals alike. As the UK prepares for its full crypto regulatory framework in 2027, Coinbase’s strategic expansion demonstrates a proactive approach to regulatory compliance, potentially reshaping asset accessibility for investors and serving as a model for other jurisdictions and platforms to follow.
